Photo of the Day: Miami-Dade Road Construction

The SR 826 / SR 836 Interchange reconstruction is a 5-year road improvement project designed to alleviate the congested interchange between the north-south Palmetto and east-west Dolphin expressways in the heart of Miami-Dade County. The massive four-level interchange project includes construction of several new bridges, reconstruction of more than 5 miles of highway to provide additional lanes, and modifications to Flagler Street and Milam Dairy Road.

The launching gantry in this photo is 460 feet long and weighs approximately 475 tons. It’s used for efficient assemblage of tight radius segmental bridges like the ones being built for the SR 826/SR 836 reconstruction project. It moves from one pier to the next, ensuring each pre-fabricated bridge segment fits precisely with its adjacent segments. A truly impressive structure for modern-day bridge building.
