On May 3rd, a horse by the name of California Chrome won the Kentucky derby in Louisville, Kentucky. This week California Chrome is headed to the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore for a chance to win the second leg of the Triple Crown and the Woodlawn Vase trophy. Well, a replica of the original Woodlawn Vase that is, because the real four-million dollar Tiffany trophy actually resides in an Art Museum full time, and not even the winner of the Preakness Stakes is allowed to take the real trophy home. How do like that.

Photo of the Day: Thoroughbred

To be a Triple Crown winner, a thoroughbred must be three years old, and win at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes in the same season. There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners in the history of horse racing, and the last time it happened was more than 35 years ago when Affirmed did it in 1978.
