Railroad tycoon, Henry Flagler, successfully connected Key
West and the rest of the Florida Keys with the U.S. mainland in January 1912. This
made it possible for visitors (mostly wealthy northerners) to reach the relaxing
and secluded warm-weather vacation spots offered by the Keys.
