Wild horses usually give birth in mid to late spring, but
racing horses are bred to be born as close to January 1 as possible. This will
give them a size advantage when competing against other horses born later in
the year.

Photo of the Day: Miami River and Biscayne Bay
The Miami River flows from the terminus of the Miami Canal near the Miami International Airport to Biscayne Bay. This less than 6 miles long river is considered one of the shortest working rivers in the United States, but has long been used for recreational watercrafts as well as small cargo ships destined for the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands. In recent years, there has been a move to clean up and improve the river’s overall condition. The renewed interest in improving and developing areas along the river is starting to attract new shops, restaurants, and residences close to the banks of the Miami River, which may very well be the next real estate frenzy in Miami.

Photo of the Day: Metromover over Biscayne Boulevard
The Miami Metromover is one of only three of its kind in the
United States. The other two are in Detroit and Jacksonville. The Miami
Metromover is considered the most successful example of a downtown automated
people mover system, and the best part of it is that it’s absolutely free to
riders. It provides a fast and easy way to travel within the greater downtown
areas and adjacent Brickell, Park West and Omni neighborhoods.

Photo of the Day: Miami-Dade Road Construction
The SR 826 / SR 836 Interchange reconstruction is a 5-year road improvement project designed to alleviate the congested interchange between the north-south Palmetto and east-west Dolphin expressways in the heart of Miami-Dade County. The massive four-level interchange project includes construction of several new bridges, reconstruction of more than 5 miles of highway to provide additional lanes, and modifications to Flagler Street and Milam Dairy Road.
The launching gantry in this photo is 460 feet long and weighs approximately 475 tons. It’s used for efficient assemblage of tight radius segmental bridges like the ones being built for the SR 826/SR 836 reconstruction project. It moves from one pier to the next, ensuring each pre-fabricated bridge segment fits precisely with its adjacent segments. A truly impressive structure for modern-day bridge building.
